How to detect blocked drains or pipework

If you think you might have a blockage in your drains or pipework, it’s important to act quickly to avoid any serious damage or overflowing to occur. In this blog, we’ve put together some of the ways you can detect blocked pipes or drains and when you should call on a professional for help:

Detecting a blockage

The following are signs to look out for when trying to detect blocked drains or pipes:

Gurgling Sounds

The first sign of a blocked drain or pipe is often the sound of gurgling. This is caused by air being trapped in the drain and escaping when water is running. It’s important to remember that gurgling alone doesn’t always mean that something is blocked, but when partnered with the other warning signs below, it could indicate a problem.

Water Draining Slowly

A sign of a drainage problem could be water draining away slowly from your sink, toilet or shower. If you notice that water is draining slowly from all of these, then it is very likely that your drains are suffering from a blockage. If only one appliance, say just your toilet for example, is experiencing an issue, then the blockage is more than likely only in a pipe that is connected to the specific appliance.

Unpleasant Odours

A bad smell coming from your pipes is often a sign that something is blocked. The smell is often caused by bits of food being stuck in the pipes and decomposing. Bacteria is aggravated by water, so running the tap can actually make odours much worse.
