Experiencing a water leak in your home can be stressful with the potential of damages to your property. Be it a pipe that has burst or an appliance that is malfunctioning, it’s crucial to act quickly and effectively to minimise any possible damage. In this article, we guide you through the steps to take if you experience a leak at home:

Assess the leak

First things first: remain calm and assess the leak. Panicking will only hinder your ability to take the necessary action to solve the problem. Do your best to determine where the leak is coming from and the extent of the damage.

Turn off the water supply

If you do experience a leak, you should quickly shut off the valve of your main water supply. The valve is often placed near your water meter or where the main water line enters your home, but this isn’t always the case. By shutting off the water supply, you will have a much better chance of appropriately addressing the issue and preventing further damage.

Switch off electricity

We all know water and electricity do not mix! If the water leak you are experiencing is anywhere near any electronic appliances, outlets or wires, head to your circuit breaker and immediately switch off the electricity. By doing so, you will avoid any electric shocks or potential fires.

Mitigate water damage

Mitigate further water damage to your property by taking immediate action. You can use a towel, bucket or a wet & dry vacuum to remove excess water, depending on the type of leak and its location. Any items that have been affected by the water leak should be placed on a raised surface, out of the way of the damaged area to dry.

Contact our plumbing professionals

Regardless of the nature of the leak, it’s always best to call on plumbing professionals to assess and rectify any issues. Our plumbing engineers are extensively trained to handle leaks with safety as the priority. After you have addressed the immediate concerns, you can avoid extensive and costly damage by having an experience plumber repair the source of the leak and restore any affected areas.

Taking prompt and appropriate action when experiencing a leak at home is vital to ensure everyone’s safety and to avoid costly damages. By keeping calm, turning off the necessary utilities and calling for professional help, you will be in the best position to navigate the damage and inconvenience of a water leak.
